Popular from roughly 1840 to the early 1900s Victorians are ornately decorated buildings that came about during the industrialization of building practices in which many new materials and techniques were tried, sometimes with quirky results. Victorian is a blanket term that covers many different homes styles. Gothic Revival, Italianate, Second Empire, Stick Style, Eastlake Victorian, Folk Victorian and Queen Anne are all architectural styles in the Victorian vein. Because there are so many different styles of Victorians it is hard to pin down characteristics that fit all of them. In Portland most Victorians can be identified by their steeply pitched roofs, ornate and complex exterior architectural detailing and paint and tall windows. The interiors typically have high interior ceilings, elaborate use of stained, beveled and etched glass, carved wood posts and panels and decorative plaster or tin ceilings.
